Let’s Talk About Hot Flashes – Breaking the Silence on Menopause
We recently had an important and empowering conversation on menopause and hot flashes—and one thing was clear: women need more open, honest discussions about this stage of life.
What are hot flashes?
They are sudden waves of heat, often affecting the face, neck, and chest, sometimes accompanied by sweating, palpitations, and even anxiety. These episodes can last a few minutes but may recur many times a day.
Did you know?
• Up to 80% of women experience hot flashes during menopause
• They can last for years (often 5–10 years or more)
• They can significantly affect sleep, mood, and quality of life (The Menopause Society)
Why do they happen?
Hormonal fluctuations—especially declining estrogen—affect the body’s temperature regulation, triggering these sudden heat surges.
What helps?
From our discussion, key strategies included:
Lifestyle changes (cool environments, layered clothing, avoiding triggers like caffeine/alcohol)
Stress management and sleep hygiene
Medical options when needed (hormonal and non-hormonal therapies)
Most importantly:
Hot flashes are real, common, and manageable—and no woman should feel alone or dismissed.
At The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc., we remain committed to creating safe spaces for women to learn, share, and access the care they deserve.
Let’s continue the conversation.
Have you experienced hot flashes? What has helped you?
