Human papillomavirus (HPV) doesn’t just cause cervical cancer — it is linked to multiple cancers affecting both women and men:
99% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV
90% of anal cancers are caused by HPV
1 in 3 head & neck cancers are linked to HPV
4 in 5 vaginal cancers are caused by HPV
~half of vulvar cancers are linked to HPV
~half of penile cancers are caused by HPV
The good news?
We have the tools to prevent HPV-related cancers.
Through:
Vaccination (ideally ages 9–14, boys & girls)
Cervical cancer screening
Timely treatment of precancerous lesions
We could eliminate almost all cases of cervical cancer and dramatically reduce other HPV-related cancers.
