Vulvar cancer is a rare but important gynecologic cancer that every woman should know about.

What is vulvar cancer?
Vulvar cancer occurs in the outer female genital area (the vulva), most commonly affecting the labia. It often develops slowly and may begin as precancerous skin changes.

Warning signs to watch for:
• Persistent itching, burning, or pain of the vulva
• A lump, sore, or thickened area of skin
• Skin color changes (white, red, or dark patches)
• Bleeding or discharge not related to menstruation
• A sore that does not heal

Risk factors include:
• Persistent HPV infection
• Increasing age
• Smoking
• Chronic vulvar skin conditions (such as lichen sclerosus)
• Weakened immune system

Can vulvar cancer be prevented?
Yes—HPV vaccination, regular gynecologic examinations, early evaluation of persistent vulvar symptoms, and smoking cessation can reduce risk.

Key message:
Do not ignore persistent itching, pain, or unusual skin changes. Early detection leads to highly successful treatment outcomes.

The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc. encourages women to seek evaluation early and to speak openly about vulvar health. Too may women wait for prolonged periods, sometimes months to years before seeking medical attention, resulting in delayed diagnosis and reduced chances of being cured.

Awareness saves lives. Get your medical health checks as soon as possible.
